Bridging Health and Education Through Evidence-Based Health Literacy Strategies
Health literacy is the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others.(1) It is estimated that 36% of U.S. adults have some difficulty understanding and reading health information.(2) Health literacy is a key driver of preventable ED visits(3), hospitalizations(4) and disengagement from the healthcare system. Addressing low health literacy needs through communication is key to stakeholders understanding their health, following up on their care plans and utilizing appropriate plan services to maintain best health. Similar connections can be made to students and their families in following up on assignments, understanding learning plans and accessing community resources. Strong communication among educators and families helps foster a supportive and positive learning environment.
In this masterclass, we will explore two evidence-based health literacy resources: (1) the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) and (2) the teach-back method, or “closing the loop,” a communication technique that helps ensures patients understand the information they need to know. Collectively we will also discuss the application of these resources in the education space to improve both verbal and written communication to a variety of stakeholders in various settings.
