Concurrents 1
November 3, 2025
9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Language, culture, and literacy are deeply intertwined—and nowhere is that more evident than in the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ commitment to preserving their language while strengthening reading habits for families. This panel will feature community and school leaders from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians sharing how they are advancing language revitalization alongside efforts to foster reading as a daily practice for both children and parents. Participants will hear how literacy is being practiced and pursued in ways that honor tradition while preparing future generations for success. Moderated by Mike McGuffee, CEO of Unite for Literacy, the conversation will highlight the role of innovative approaches like Community Book Gardens, which place culturally relevant, accessible books directly into communities. Join us to learn how this community is blending heritage and innovation to advance literacy, build stronger family connections, and secure the survival of a language and culture for generations to come.
