From Family Literacy to Family Engagement: K–12 and Community College Partnerships
What happens when a public school system and a community college form a long-term partnership to support families? This 75-minute session presents a powerful case study from Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where the social capital developed through the Toyota Family Literacy Program in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools (WS/FCS) created a foundation for lasting success in the College Lift Program at Forsyth Technical Community College.
Through the voice of a bilingual parent, participants will follow a family’s journey from adult ESL classes to two daughters thriving in postsecondary education—one earning a college credential while still in high school. This session includes a hands-on co-design activity and tools for building sustainable, community-rooted family engagement ecosystems grounded in NCFL’s principles.
