The Global Family, School, and Community Engagement Rubrics: An International Research Collaboration to Strengthen Global Praxis and Partnerships
From Brazil to Australia, and Colorado to Colombia, members of the Global Family Engagement in Education Network–a community of practice coordinated by the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution–identified a need for school-based resources to collectively assess family, school, and community engagement practices and to build more inclusive and equitable partnerships. In 2022, the Center Universal Education teamed up with the Colorado Department of Education and education leaders from five countries to co-construct the Global Family, School, and Community Engagement Rubrics tool based on Colorado’s foundational work. This open-access rubrics tool guides schools, districts, and civil society organizations through their own exploratory assessment and strategy development process. These internationally piloted rubrics examine schools’ progress on building inclusion, trust, learning, and resources for engaging families (Epstein et al., 2018; Mapp & Bergman, 2021). The rubrics were piloted over the course of two years with school districts in Colorado as well as six government schools in Brazil and Colombia. This workshop guides teams through how to use these tools to improve their own partnerships and practices, and details the process of developing and testing the rubrics to ensure they respond to diverse school communities around the world.
